Types of Windows
Double Pane Windows
Oftentimes, replacement windows feature dual pane glass. Double pane windows typically have a type of gas sealed in between each pane that’s used as an insulator. Single pane windows don’t have this gas layer, and therefore your home would have less insulation and more expensive utility bills with the single pane option. The double panes also reduce noise or sound pollution coming in or out of your home.
Storm & Hurricane Impact Windows
Storm windows, also known as hurricane windows or storm-resistant windows, are built to withstand greater impacts (such as flying debris) during unpredictable and strong weather. Typically the glass is coated with a special treatment that prevents glass from shattering into shards should the glass break. Instead, this film allows the glass to crack upon impact. Cracking glass is a much safer alternative to non-impact windows because projectile shattering glass is more likely to cause injury and damage.
Storm windows typically have a stronger frame as well. Instead of using wood, it’s recommended that hurricane windows use a steel or aluminum frame which can withstand more impact. The strength of the glass and the frame work together to protect your home from intense changes in pressure which can cause structural blowouts during hurricanes. Because of these advantages, in storm-prone areas having storm and hurricane windows installed can reduce the cost of your homeowners insurance.
Replacement Windows
Unlike hurricane or storm windows, replacement windows don’t cover your existing windows. Replacement windows require a special type of installation where your previous windows are removed, and then replaced with an upgrade. Most replacement windows are constructed with dual pane, insulated glass which not only adds solidity to the structure of your home but also works to prevent energy waste.
Replacement windows have more insulation than older models so they keep the heat or cold out, while still letting in natural sunlight. Depending on the window you purchase, they can even protect against UV light.
Luckily, upgrading for safety and efficiency doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your home’s style. With different frame types, window styles, and a range of other options, you will increase the value of your property in more ways than one. Having so many options available can seem overwhelming, however we have dedicated and knowledgeable staff that are available to assist you every step of the way.
Non-Impact Rated Windows
Hurricane and storm windows can be expensive, depending on several factors. If you don’t live in a storm-prone location, non-impact rated windows can be a viable, cost-effective purchase. Typically non-impact rated windows consist of single pane glass. This offers less protection from strong winds and pressure blowouts, and less insulation. However, they get the job done by still protecting your home from leaks, dust, bugs, and more. If budget is your first priority, this is the option for you.
